The Best of Belize: The Thatch Caye Resort Experience

Home to the second largest Barrier Reef in the world (behind Australia’s Great Barrier Reef), Belize is an ocean lover’s heaven. I had high expectations going into the trip, and it certainly did not disappoint. I based my Belize adventure at Thatch Caye Resort – an all-inclusive private island with a casual and rustic vibe. The accommodations are simple, but breathtaking- designed in Belizean island style. The island is limited to 30 guests at a time, so it’s an experience that encourages community while also offering the peace of feeling disconnected if you so wish. I spent a blissful week on this island that was equal parts relaxation and adventure…

Getting There

My experience getting to Thatch Caye was actually quite easy, compared to other trips I’ve been on. I flew out of LAX via American Airlines on a red eye flight to Miami. In the early morning, I boarded another flight from Miami to Belize City International Airport, and had a short layover before a domestic flight via Tropic Air from Belize City to Dangriga. I enjoyed a 45 minute scenic flight followed by a 30 minute speedboat to Thatch Caye.

My home base on the island was Cascabele– a premier beachfront cabana with a rooftop view of the ocean and surrounding palm trees. The interior was stunning- reclaimed wood used for decoration and beachy details like a conch shell sink and pebble shower floor.

Things To Do

“EXPLORE THATCH CAYE AND THE SURROUNDING UNDERWATER WORLD”

As a guest at Thatch Caye, bikes, kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel gear, fishing rods, and a Hobie Catamaran are all available for your use. I took full advantage sailing the Hobie Cat, which became my favorite past time during my stay. Each time we took it out further and further out to sea, and would spend easily 4 hours a day out in the water. It was paradise.

The resort organizes island and land excursions, including snorkeling and scuba diving, sailing, fishing, lobster diving, and island hopping. I took a boat out a couple times to get acquainted with the Barrier reef, its diverse marine life, and neighboring islands.

My favorite activities included:

Snorkel + Free Dive

Sail + Look for Manatees
Island Hop in the Caribbean

One of my favorite experiences was an island-hopping excursion to nearby Tobacco Caye. It was the most colorful little island I had ever seen- with beach huts of every color of the rainbow. I spent a glorious afternoon jumping off the dock with some local kids, collecting sea shells, and wandering around the small island.

Thanks for having me, Thatch Caye Resort. I am sure it won’t be my last visit!
